The New Zealand beekeepers position their hives in wild uncultivated areas close to the wild Manuka bushes. New Zealand is the only place in the world that the Manuka bush is found.

Manuka Honey

Due to the positioning of the bee hives, the bees gather nectar from the flowers of the wild Manuka bush. The honey making process is enriched by the pollution free environment of New Zealand. Whilst the Manuka Bush is native to New Zealand, it is part of the same species as the Kanuka Bush, Australian Tea Tree and Jellybush all of which been widely known for their unique health benefits for generations of local indigenous people including the Maori and Aboriginal tribes peoples.

The Active Manuka honey has been found to help skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, as well as help with IBS symptoms. It is also very soothing for coughs and sore throats.

The UMF Rating of "Active Manuka Honey" (The Strength)

The UMF rating indicates the strength of the antibacterial effect of the Mankua Honey. UMF is the abbreviation of Unique Manuka Factor. A rating of 10 or more is considered to be suitable for therapeutic medical use. Such honey is referred to as 'active', although much ordinary Manuka Honey is still marketed as being active despite not having the required minimal rating.

The UMF rating signifies the activity level of the Manuka Honey. This ranges from 5+ to 30+. Ratings 15+ and lower are used to support good general health. The stronger Manuka Honey strengths 16+, 20+ and 25+ are generally used by those with more severe medical conditions.

The UMF rating is your guarantee that the honey has been tested and verified for its antibacterial activity by the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

How do you use Manuka Honey?

Unlike regular Honey, Manuka Honey is not as sweet. It has a stronger, more bland flavour.

  • Apply directly to your skin - if you are treating sore, dry or blistered skin you should apply Manuka Honey directly to the are affected and wrap in a dry bandage.

  • Taken orally from the spoon - this is the most popular way of taking Manuka Honey, just neat off the spoon.

  • In a warm (not hot) drink – Manuka Honey can be used as a sweetener in Tea and Coffee but do not put it into a boiling cup of water as this will kill off most of the active enzymes.

  • On your breakfast – Adding Manuka Honey to your toast, breakfast cereal or yoghurt, is a great way to take Manuka Honey without realising it. This method is particularly popular for children.

It is important to remember that the natural enzymes are key to the way in which Manuka Honey works, therefore it is important to not kill off the enzymes by subjecting them to heat above 40 degrees centigrade.
